1. Preface: AMD’s new generation RDNA 3 GPU that has been waiting for 2 years.

On December 12th, this Monday, two years after the launch of RDNA 2, AMD finally came up with a brand-new RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX GPU based on RDNA 3 architecture.

Especially the flagship RX 7900 XTX, the price of 7999 yuan is 1500 yuan cheaper than that of RTX 4080, but the conventional performance can lead the opponent by 5~6%, and the performance and price directly hit the weakness of NVIDIA.

However, due to various factors, we didn’t receive the graphics card until noon on the 12th, so we didn’t have time to do more comprehensive tests. This time, I will show you more data through the evaluation of RX 7900 XT.

This test uses the Xunxun RX 7900 XT Dark Dog, based on Navi 31 chip, with 84 CPU units and 5376 stream processors. These parameters don’t seem to be much different from RX 6950 XT.

However, because RDNA 3 adopts a stream processor unit with dual emission design, each group of CU units contains 64 FP32 units and 64 INT32 units. Each FP32 and INT32 unit can perform integer or floating-point operations as required.

That is to say, when all FP/INT32 units perform floating-point operations, a group of CU units is equivalent to having 128 stream processors.

In theory, RX 7900 XT with 84 sets of CUs can be equivalent to at most 10752 stream processors, and its floating-point capability is as high as 52TFLOPS, which is 2.3 times that of RX 6950 XT.

In terms of price, Xunxun RX 7900 XT Dark Dog follows AMD’s MSRP, and the price is 7499 yuan, while RX 7900 XTX Dark Dog is 7999 yuan.

Hanxun RX7900XT Dark Dog is equipped with two 10cm and one cm ring fans, and adopts Japanese double ball bearings, which can prolong the service life by more than 2 times compared with ordinary video card fans, and the air volume is larger at the same noise level.

All three ring fans support intelligent start and stop, and will stop at low temperature or low load.

The tail end of the full-size metal backplane is hollowed out, which can improve the heat dissipation efficiency and the heat will not stay on the PCB.

2.5 slot thickness, interface with 1 HDMI 2.1 and 3 DP 2.1.

Dual 8pin power supply, there is a BIOS switch button next to the power supply interface, which can switch between mute and performance.

When the radiator is removed, eight 6mm composite heat pipes can be seen, and the cooling base is nickel-plated and mirror-treated, which can better fit the GPU core.

Super-public power supply design, 14+3 phase power supply circuit and 14 PCB board design can ensure the stable operation of graphics card under high load.

Next to the GPU core are 10 SK Hynix GDDR6 video memories, with a frequency of 20GHz and a single capacity of 2GB. Ten of them make up 320Bit 20GB, and the video memory bandwidth is 800 GB/s.

The capacitors in the power supply circuit are on the back of PCB, and all of them are expensive tantalum capacitors.

Third, theoretical performance test: 3DMark can run at 2.7GHz.

The test platform is as follows:

1、3DMark Fire Strike

In the 2K resolution 3DMark Fire Extreme test, the graphics score of RX 7900 XT reached 34630, the highest core temperature was 58℃, and the highest core operating frequency was 2755MHz.

In the 4K resolution 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra test, the graphics score of RX 7900 XT reaches 17528, the highest core temperature is 53℃, the highest fan speed is 1307RPM, and the highest core operating frequency is 2711MHz.

2、3DMark Time Spy

In the 2K resolution 3DMark Time Spy test, the graphics score of RX 7900 XT reaches 26,299, the highest core temperature is 57℃, the highest fan speed is 1310RPM, and the highest core operating frequency is 2604MHz.

In the 4K resolution 3DMark Time Spy Extreme test, the graphics score of RX 7900 XT reaches 12788, the highest core temperature is 62℃, and the highest core operating frequency is 2638MHz.

3、3DMark Speed Way

At 2K resolution, RX 7900 XT achieved 5180 when running 3DMark Speed Way.

After adjusting to 4K resolution, the score of 3DMark Speed Way is 3484.

Fourth, 1080P/2K game performance test: there is not much difference with RTX 4080.

The test data are summarized as follows:

At the resolution of 1080P, the performance of RX 7900 XT is very close to that of RTX 4080, with a gap of only 2%, but it is only 5% ahead of RX 6950 XT.

There is a serious bottleneck in the system at this resolution.

At 2K resolution, the difference between RX 7900 XT and RTX 4080 is 8%, which can lead RX6950XT by about 9%.

V. 4K game performance test: 17% different from RX 7900 XTX.

The test data are summarized as follows:

At 4K resolution, there is a gap of 17% between RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX, which is about 10% worse than RTX 4080 and 12.3% stronger than the previous generation RX 6950 XT.

Six, optical pursuit and FSR efficiency test: optical pursuit efficiency is not as good as the opponent, FSR 2.0 is better than DLSS 2.

The following test resolutions are all 3840*2160.

1. Tomb Raider: Shadow

At 4K resolution, the frame rate of RX 7900 XT is 84FPS.

After light tracing is turned on, the frame rate is reduced to 43FPS.

3. Cyberpunk 2077

At 4K resolution, the frame rate of RX 7900 XT is 62FPS.

After turning on the highest level of optical tracking, the frame rate dropped to 18FPS.

4. Bright memory: infinite

At 4K resolution, the frame rate of RX 7900 XT is 126FPS.

After the light tracing was turned on, the frame rate dropped to 50FPS.

5, the cycle of life and death

At 4K resolution, the frame rate of RX 7900 XT is 105FPS.

After the light chase was turned on, it was greatly reduced to 29FPS.

6. Cry of the Island 6

At 4K resolution, the frame rate of RX 7900 XT is 108FPS.

After the light chase was turned on, it dropped to 90FPS.

The optical tracking test data are summarized as follows:

We have tested six games, and the comprehensive test results show that the performance of two graphics cards, RX 7900XT/XTX, will decrease by 52%, while that of RTX 4080 will decrease by 41%.

FSR 2.0 will not be introduced in a separate chapter. The following is a summary of the test results:

FSR 2.0 (performance mode) can improve the frame rate by 113%, and the frame rate is improved by 103% after DLSS 2 is turned on by RTX 4080.

Now, FSR 2.0 has not lost to DLSS 2 in terms of image quality and efficiency.

Seven, baking machine and power consumption test: power consumption needs to be improved by driving.

1, baking machine test

Furmark was used to test the baking machine of RX 7900 XT, and the room temperature was 26 degrees.

Because the current GPU-Z can’t monitor the power consumption, we use HWinfo to check the power consumption of RX 7900 XT.

Furmark’s parameters are set to 1920*1080 resolution and 0AA. After running for 30 minutes, the temperature of RX 7900 XT is stable at 58 degrees, the Hot Sport temperature is 13 degrees, the fan speed is only 1298RPM, the running frequency is 1807Hz, the power consumption of GPU core is 275W, and the power consumption of the whole card is 330W W.

2. Power consumption test

When running GTA V, the frame rate of RX 7900 XT is 188FPS, the power consumption of GPU is 172W, and the power consumption of the whole card is 205W W..

In contrast, at the same resolution, the frame rate of RX 6950 XT is also 187FPS, but the GPU power consumption is only 125W W. NVIDIA’s next-generation RTX 4080/4090 has the same power consumption as RX 6950 XT.

We once thought that the monitoring software was abnormal, but the data obtained by power consumption test confirmed that the power consumption displayed by the software was correct.

At the resolution of 1080P, the GPU power consumption of RX 7900 XT runs to 274W TGP, and the power consumption of the whole card reaches the upper limit of 330W.

VIII. Summary: I hope AMD can solve the driver problem as soon as possible.

In the initial test of RX 7900 XTX, because we received the product too late, we didn’t have enough time to conduct a more comprehensive test. This time, we added the test data of Le Guang Zhui and FSR to the evaluation of the RX 7900 XT Dark Dog.

The following is a summary of the test results!

1. Performance

At present, the gap between high-end graphics cards and RTX 4080 can hardly be opened at 1080P resolution, and the gap between RX 7900 XT and RTX 4080 is only 2% at this resolution.

If the resolution is 4K, RX 7900 XT is 17% worse than RX 7900 XTX and 10% weaker than RTX 4080.

Compared with the previous generation, RX 7900 XT is 4% stronger than RTX 3090 Ti and 12% faster than RX 6950 XT.

2, light chasing

We have tested six light-chasing games, and the frame rate of RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX will be reduced by 52% after light-chasing is turned on, while that of RTX 4080 will be reduced by 43%.

In the light-catching performance, AMD still needs to keep trying to catch up.

3、FSR 2.0

In the oversampling algorithm, FSR 2.0 can be said to be completely lost to NVIDIA’s DLSS 2.

After starting FSR 2.0 (performance mode), the frame rate of RX 7900 XTX increased by 108%, and the frame rate of RX 7900 XT increased by 113%.

NVIDIA’s RTX 4080 has improved the average frame rate by 103% after turning on DLSS 2, which lags behind RX 7900 XT.

In terms of image quality, we have also done corresponding comparative tests before, setting the same level, and there is almost no difference between FSR 2.0 and DLSS 2.

4. Power consumption

The performance of power consumption is beyond our expectation.

The previous generation of RX 6950 XT has a resolution of 1080P, and the GPU running GTA V consumes only 125W, which is not much different from RTX 4080/4090.

However, the power consumption of the RX 7900 XT running GTA V at the same resolution is as high as 175W, which is really puzzling.

In the FurMark baking machine test, the full-load running frequency of RX 7900 XT is only 1800MHz, which is not as good as that of RTX 4080 and RX 6950 XT.

We have tested a number of 3A games, and several of them will run full TGP at 1080P resolution, so to release the performance of RX 7900 XT requires very high power consumption.

Considering the brand-new architecture of RDNA 3 and upgrading to 5nm process technology, this situation should not really happen. The guess may be that the driver optimization is not perfect enough.

It is reported that AMD’s siege lion is now working overtime to solve the driving problem. At present, the performance of RDNA 3 GPU is definitely not normal. We expect AMD to solve the power consumption problem as soon as possible, so that RX 7900 XT/XTX can recover its due performance.

Now we have to wait for AMD to come up with better products to restore the GPU field to normal competition, which is also a good thing for players!
