Why are there differences between census data and previous years’ data? Official response →

This morning, the the State Council Information Office held a press conference. A spokesman for the National Bureau of Statistics said that the relevant data of the seventh national census have attracted great attention from all walks of life. The difference between the published census data and the data published in previous years is mainly due to the different calibers of the two data.

Census data is more comprehensive and accurate.

A spokesman for the National Bureau of Statistics said that the population data in non-census years were calculated by sampling survey, so there were survey and sampling errors. The census data in the census year is obtained from a comprehensive survey, and the data is more comprehensive and accurate, which is also the reason why countries all over the world have to carry out census in order to find out the population situation. According to international practice, after the census, the sampling data between the two censuses will be revised, which will eliminate the difference between the current sampling data and the new data obtained by the census.

Fu Linghui, spokesperson of the National Bureau of Statistics:At present, the National Bureau of Statistics is doing this work, and we will revise the relevant data such as the total population, birth population and urbanization rate between the two censuses. I can share some data with you: in 2016, the original published birth population was 17.86 million, and after revision according to the age-specific population data of the census, the birth population was 18.83 million, an increase of 970,000. In 2017, the original published estimated birth population data was 17.23 million, and it was revised to 17.65 million, an increase of 420,000. The average number of people born in the relevant years between the two censuses will be revised and increased by about 1 million every year. The detailed data will be published in Statistical Abstract of China in 2021. I hope you will pay attention to it in time.

China is still in the stage of mild aging.

On the issue of aging, Fu Linghui said that there are some misunderstandings in the society. Many people think that China has entered a deeply aging society. According to international practice, if the population aged 60 and above accounts for more than 10% of the total population, a country will enter an aging society. If the proportion of people aged 60 and over is between 10-20%, it belongs to the stage of mild aging; The proportion between 20-30% is in the stage of moderate aging; More than 30% is in the stage of severe aging. According to the data of this census, the population aged 60 and above accounts for 18.7% of the total population, indicating that China is still in the stage of mild aging.

Fu Linghui, spokesperson of the National Bureau of Statistics:About the total male population of all ages in China is more than 30 million than the female population, which is actually distributed in different ages. Among them, there are 17.52 million more men of marriageable age between 20 and 40 than women, and the sex ratio is 108.9. Among young people, the problem of more boys than girls is a realistic problem. We should also see that with the implementation of the comprehensive "two-child" birth policy and the change of birth concept brought about by economic and social development, the sex ratio of the birth population in China is gradually decreasing.
