This is the second time that the men’s volleyball team of Sheng ‘an Middle School won the provincial championship after the 14th Sichuan Sports Meeting last year. In recent years, this middle school has trained a number of national and provincial volleyball players, and was named as "National High-level Reserve Talent Base" and "National Youth Campus Volleyball Characteristic School". Why can this small school with limited training facilities achieve such outstanding results?
The national player who walked out of the simple training hall
Sheng ‘an Middle School, founded in 2002, covers an area of only 28 mu and has more than 1,900 students. It is the smallest middle school in Xindu District.
As the bell rang, the students rushed to the playground for activities. On one side of the playground is the school volleyball training hall, where more than 20 volleyball teenagers are sweating their daily volleyball training. At present, eight members of the school’s men’s volleyball team have been selected for this year’s Sichuan Youth Men’s Volleyball Training Team.

Different from the high-standard modern volleyball halls in many schools, due to the limited space and the need to leave lighting space for the adjacent residential buildings, this volleyball hall in Sheng ‘an Middle School is relatively simple and cannot be made into a closed venue, so it is "ventilated in all directions" and "hot in Leng Xia in winter".
During the training of the players day after day, the blue walls in the museum were chiseled with mottled ball marks. On the top of the shed, which is more than ten meters high, there are five volleyball cards stuck on it, recording the intense training scenes again and again.
It is in this simple volleyball hall that many national and provincial volleyball players have been trained, and many students have entered the 985 and 211 colleges through volleyball majors. The male queue in Sheng ‘an Middle School has also won the volleyball championships in Sichuan and Chengdu for many times.

In 2014, Sheng ‘an Middle School was awarded by the Volleyball Management Center of the State Sports General Administration as the first "National High-level Reserve Talent Base of Volleyball" in Sichuan; In 2020, it was named "National Youth Campus Volleyball Characteristic School"; In the past five years, Guo Shunxiang, Chen Xilong and Jiang Zhiyuan have been selected into the national (training) team, and Chen Xilong will also participate in the Chengdu Universiade this summer.
Stick to it all the year round
Talking about the achievements of school volleyball, Du Xianqin, a 55-year-old volleyball coach who has been teaching in Sheng ‘an Middle School for 20 years, said: "I think there are no other cheats, nothing more than two points, one is persistence, and the other is love."
In 2003, 35-year-old Du Xianqin came to Sheng ‘an Middle School as a volleyball coach. At that time, he was the only volleyball coach in the school. "Students train in the open air, and the net is opened when it is used, and put away when it is not used."
Today, in addition to teaching volleyball, Du Xianqin is also the vice president of the school, and he has more administrative work. However, the volleyball hall is still the place where he stays the most every day.

Arrive at school at 7:00 every morning and start a day’s work; Volleyball training class from 4:40 to 6:50 pm; Conduct more than one hour of evening training in the evening, and leave school for home after 9:30 — — This is Du Xianqin’s daily schedule, and winter and summer vacations are no exception. After work, he also learned new ways of playing and training volleyball in various ways, and discussed with the players.
"Keep your eyes on the ball and judge the position!" Among the tall players, Du Xianqin’s figure is very thin, and his back is a little rickety. Although it is only a daily training, he is still very strict, and after each confrontation training, he answers the questions with the players one by one.
"During training, Coach Du was very strict, and we were used to his loud voice." Wu Zhangjie of Class 6, Grade 2, has been in contact with volleyball since the fifth grade of primary school. Now he is the captain of the men’s queue in Sheng ‘an Middle School and the captain of the young men’s queue in Sichuan Province.
In Wu Jason’s view, volleyball has not only brought him a strong body, but also strengthened his heart, allowing him to face up to setbacks and learn and grow in failure.

In an important game in 2019, in the competition for key points, the mistakes of Wu Zhangjie and his teammates caused the defeat of the game. After that, he was depressed for a long time Encouraged by his coach and teammates, he gradually came out and began to train harder and harder, and achieved good results in subsequent competitions. "Competitive sports is like this. If you hold the idea of winning and being afraid of losing, you will never be able to play it in your life. You will only grow up if you experience failure." This is the feeling of Wu Jason.
The most impressive game of Zhong Guoliang in Class 6, Grade 2, took place in the 14th Sports Meeting of Sichuan Province last year.
"At the last provincial games, we lost to our opponents and came second, so everyone was holding on to win back before the competition last year. In addition to training harder, we must also adjust our mentality to compete. " In the end, after fierce fighting, Sheng ‘an Middle School won the competition. Zhong Guoliang said: "At that moment, I was really happy. This is the charm of competitive sports!"

In Zhong Guoliang’s view, sports talent is only one aspect. To achieve results, the most important thing is to keep training day after day and to be able to withstand loneliness and boredom. Now, he is a national athlete.
Inheritance of volleyball education
In the most conspicuous position at the entrance of Sheng ‘an Middle School, there is a "one-hour physical exercise arrangement plan every day". In the white teaching building of the school, there are ten characters written "each of us has strengths".
Yuan Dabin, the principal of Sheng ‘an Middle School, said that the school has always been committed to the working idea of "integration of physical education and education" and insisted on "five educations at the same time", so that students can develop healthily both physically and mentally after busy study, especially under the drive of volleyball, students actively participate in sports and their mental outlook is more sunny. The new campus under construction in Sheng ‘an Middle School will be equipped with professional volleyball hall, football field and curling hall to provide students with better sports conditions.

Du Xianqin said that since the establishment of the school 21 years ago, five principals of the middle school have consistently supported the development of school volleyball, created training conditions in limited venues, enabled more children to keep fit through sports, and enabled groups of students to enter ideal universities.
After 30 years of teaching, Du Xianqin also stepped into middle-aged and elderly people from the prime of life. To his delight, many students came back after graduating from college and joined the volleyball education as he did. In Xindu District, more than a dozen of his students returned to the local area to promote the development of volleyball. Xindu District also takes volleyball as the leading sport, which improves the physical health level of students in the whole district according to the school system.
At present, two of the four volleyball coaches in Sheng ‘an Middle School are Du Xianqin’s former students, including coach Ye Yingquan. Ye Yingquan returned to his alma mater and familiar volleyball hall after graduating from Chengdu Institute of Physical Education, and has been teaching in the school for 10 years.

When talking about Chen Xilong who is about to attend the Universiade, Du Xianqin can’t hide his pride. He said, "I believe he will go all out and hope he can go further." Wu Jason and Zhong Guoliang followed the example of their brothers Chen Xilong and Jiang Zhiyuan, and "hoped that they could shine on a bigger stage".
