2024 BMW i4 M50: Full of vitality

The shape of the headlights presents a firm and confident appearance for the electric car, while the slim rearview mirror and embedded door handles add a streamlined appearance. The muscular, curved greenhouse and obvious shoulder line of the car enhance its sports atmosphere.

I especially like how the door handle is smoothly integrated into the car body, the window lines are seamlessly integrated into the Hoffmeister bend, and the roof is slightly tilted backwards, giving it a general outline. The rear bumper is equipped with a diffuser and sharp vertical blades, which adds its sports characteristics.

The kidney grille is a controversial function in many recent BMW models, especially since the second generation 4 Series (the inspiration of i4), which has aroused my interest in this point. Walking into the car, the 2024 BMW i4 has a low, slender and curved dashboard, which complements its sporty appearance. The air outlet of the air conditioner and the outer edge of the steering wheel can be trimmed, but overall, the interior feels upscale and elegant.

During the test drive of the 2024 BMW i4, I found that it was better than the updated one. I explored customizable layouts, which are very intuitive and can be easily accessed through the scroll bars and buttons on the steering wheel.

The central display screen supports touch input, but navigation can also be carried out by using the knurled rotary controller in the central console. The menu structure is very simple, and the required functions can be achieved with minimal input, and the software runs smoothly in my test.


As a six-foot-tall man, I find it a bit challenging to get into the driver’s seat because of its low position, which is a common trade-off for cars in this market segment. The steering wheel provides good grip, and the heating function is located on the lower spokes, which is very convenient.

Bucket seats provide adequate lumbar support, and the thickness of side cushions is just right. There is enough legroom, but when i4 turns to the second generation Neue Klasse platform, the support under the thigh may be better. For my height, the head space is a little tight, which can be corrected in native platforms such as Neue Klasse, which should allow slightly lower seat installation.

The back seat is easier to get into, but the legroom is a little tight for my size 11 boots. My knee didn’t touch the seat back, and the backrest angle and armrest design are very comfortable, but it may be uncomfortable to travel for a long time. As expected, the head space is limited, because the roof line of i4 sacrifices some practicality for style. Because of the transmission channel, it will be difficult to accommodate three adults my size in the back row. Interior features include panoramic sunroof, standard 10-speaker sound system with 205W amplifier and ambient lighting with pulsating function. Optional 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and 464-watt amplifier are also available.

Driving impression

The 2024 BMW i4 is available in single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD configurations, which can provide up to 536 horsepower and 586 pound-feet. Based on 2023 vehicles with similar power systems and components, i4 is impressive, although it is not built on a special platform for electric vehicles.

I4 has strong acceleration and can maintain good performance even at highway speed. It feels flexible and operates like a real driving car, which is impressive for vehicles weighing more than 5,000 pounds. Steering is fast and accurate, but it can provide more feedback. Car owners and critics will also point out that even when driving on the highway, the cab can keep quiet and there is not much wind noise.

The price of the 2024 BMW i4 before optional accessories ranges from $52,200 to $69,700, excluding the destination fee and handling fee of $995. By using the configurator on the BMW USA website, I set the specifications of the BMW i4 M50 in 2024 at a maximum of $80,095!
